Those are just adorable! My first quilt I used yardage so I washed it first. My subsequent quilts have used precuts (fat quarters or smaller) so I did not wash first. But I wash before using, of course.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge of fabrics. I don't pre-wash my fabrics and sometimes didn't wash the finished quilt right away. After reading your info I'll be making sure washing the quilt is the first thing i do after its done! Thanks!

I used to prewash everything but just recently learned that for quilting you shouldn't wash till afterwards. I do like the way the fabric handles before and LOVE the way the finished product looks after being washed! :)

I don't always wash. I like the effect of making and quilting first and then washing (when I make a quilt). I have taken classes where the instructor asked to wash our fabrics before class. Changes the feeling it tho and makes it harder to get straight lines.

I do not pre-wash my fabric. I tried once when I first started and had a mess and thought after that I was not supposed to but did always wonder. I have been quilting for 8 years and it was not until I read your post on Chasing Cotton's that you helped me see what to do:)

Thanks for having a giveaway, very cute fabric, my daughter has started to quilt so if I win I will give them to her so she has fabric to quilt with, so thank you for the opportunity!

Hi, I've come over from Chasing Cottons - thanks for the great post and this fabulous giveaway!
I don't pre-wash quilting cottons but I do pre-wash flannel fabrics as they shrink more and I don't want the size of my project badly affected.

I never wash because I'm worried about fraying and too lazy to have to iron all that washed fabric before cutting! I'll totally buy in with you on the "if I don't wash then the chemicals will keep my stash safe"! :-)
Happy Easter! Thanks for the chance to win that beautiful fabric!

April Shae said...

Well honestly it depends on what I am doing with the fabric. If I am quilting with it, then NO I don't wash. But if I am making clothes for my daughter (or anyother random child I sew for ;), then yes I wash the fabric first!!! Espcially if it is two different types of material, to allow for shrinkage!

Nancy D. said...

I read your post on Chasing Cottons. I don't wash most the time, unless, like you said, it's a bright color (red, bright pink) or a dark (black) and I know it's going to be touching a lighter color. I didn't wash once and the darker color bled into the lighter color. It looked kind of marbly - not entirely bad, but not what I wanted. Thanks for the giveaway!

I usually wash my fabric if it will be a bed quilt. I don't wash for a wall hanging since it is easier to cut the fabric with the sizing still on. Since I found color catchers, I don't worry about the colors running quite so much.

Good advice! And no, I do not wash my fabrics; like you, I find the 'stiffness' aids in getting a better fit. I love the feel of a quilt when it is washed, though, and like to do this when I have quilted them and ready to hand them over.
ianruby@iprimus.com.au

DianeY said...

Being a long-time garment sewer, I have always washed fabric because only a speck of shrinkage will affect fit. Being a more recent quilter, I don't wash fabric in general if I buy it specifically for a quilt unless it is a darker color. Besides black and dark gray, I always wash red, purple and deep blue. But I definitely use color catchers in the wash when I wash quilts.

Sometimes I wash and sometimes not. Definitely always wash red fabric, and prewashed the fabrics for the table runners as I know theyd be laundered more often. I usually skip washing for wallhangings they may never be washed. For quilts, dont mind the wrinkly cotton look when it shrinks a bit so sometimes I wash, sometimes I dont. Maybe I should was AFTER I piece and before I quilt?

1. I generally don't wash. Cause then you get fraying on some fabrics, and you have to iron it cause its all soft and crinkly and is just a real mess. I've always known that not washing it means its full of chemicals, but I generally try and hand wash the finished product to get rid of them before selling the item, or giving it away.

I almost always prewash yardage (not precuts, as you say, it's problematic). I am sensitive to the formaldehyde. I do occasionally find fabrics that bleed; Retayne fixes this problem most excellently. Most fabrics don't seem to shrink much, but since I often mix fabrics from different manufacturers, I feel more comfortable if I have dried them on high. It's no fun if one fabric shrinks more than the rest!

I struggled with what was the "right" thing to do in the wash/don't wash dilemma. But then I thought, like you just confirmed, there is no way you could wash a precut fabric (charm pack or jelly roll) and have good results--therefore it must be OK not to wash. Thanks, and keep on quilting!

Bec Clarke said...

I hate washing fabric, it's terrible I know but can't help it.

Unknown said...

If the fabric is off the bolt then I do not wash, but if I have purchased it via an on seller eg. ebay I like to wash to rid the fabric of any unwanted smells like cigarette smoke.

Katja said...

I always wash simply because all fabrics are different when they leave the factory. To get a consistently good result, you need to get them to as close to be the same as you can before you begin cutting. And cotton is a shocker for shrinkage too! Gentle handwash in some warm water with a little woolmix, rinse, spin them out in the machine, and if I'm in a hurry, into the dryer on gentle. Otherwise, pegged onto the line in some glorious Brissie sunshine :)

Hmm. I get so confused about washing or not... with my Gees Harbor fabrics, I have to wash and set the colors, and with big pieces, I do, too. But with small pieces - eg jelly rolls, charms, even fq's, I don't, cos they pull in the machine.

plus, I am the worst iron-er/press-er around, so to have to iron a crinkled piece of washed fabric...

Rebecca said...

For making quilts, I agree that I like the starchy feel of the fabric if I leave it unwashed. It's also more forgiving if I have a few small puckers in my quilting, the washing after usually tightens and crinkles everything up a bit.

But if I buy fabric for clothing or purses, I always pre-wash just to make sure it doesn't shrink the finished item later.

THANKS for the chance at that beautiful stack of fabric!
