I always wash because when I first started quilting my tutor told me to always wash the fabric first. It just became part of the process.

Dianne Neale said...

I started to wash, then laziness took over, and eagerness to start cutting! So now I don't

Vickie said...

I do not wash first. I have so many fabrics, that to go back and wash my stash would be a HUGE job. And my studio is away from my home, so it just means more waiting. I don't like to wait!

I loved your feature. Thank you - I always wash and press my fabric.

Just popped over from Rebecca's at Chasing Cottons. I used to wash my fabrics when using yardage, never wash precuts though. Lately, I haven't been prewashing. I haven't experienced any problems.

Teje Karjalainen said...

Hello! Thank you for this wonderful giveaway! I wash all my fabrics before sewing. I use also very much old shirts, sheets etc. so if I mix there new fabric I can't know how they change together in the washing. If all the fabric is new, it could be nice shabby result after washing the finished quilt.

Staci said...

I don't prewash, generally speaking.
I occasionally buy or am given fabric with questionable lineage, and that gets prewashed. If I'm worried, into the washer it goes. If it is premium quilting fabric, it goes straight to the cutting table.

momof3 said...

I just became a follower, love what I have seen.

I wash almost all my fabric. If I am using precuts I do not wash any. I have not seen a real difference, other then I think unwashed is easier to get good cuts from.

When I first started quilting, I washed a fat eighth bundle all together and it was a NIGHTMARE! It took me DAYS to untangle and iron out all the wrinkles. Since then the only time I have prewashed is when I used a large piece of flannel for a back because I know flannel shrinks a lot.

Karen said...

I agree I do prewash some things, especially reds....or at least I get a corner wet to see if it will bleed. I always wash my quilts with a Shout color grabber and have not had any issues!

cathie said...

i pre-wash thos fabrics I am suspicious will run, like some blacks and reds...but trust my luck with others

Melinda said...

I wash when I buy my fabric so I don't have to worry about it when it comes time to create something. If I use jelly rolls or any other pre-cuts, I buy material that I will not wash to go with it. That way all the material will be washed at the same time.
Does that make sense?

Larger fabrics are washed and line dried - smaller pieces don't as they tend to distort shape too much. But all my quilts/quited pieces get a wash and dry before they go

I always wash my fabrics. Often I wash them by hand and when I see the amount of dye that is in the water it makes me afraid to not wash. Sure would save a lot of time (and help my water bill) to not wash, but so many fabrics bleed that I just have to wash them.

Rhonda said...

Yes, I wash! It is usually to give me more time to appreciate and fondle the fabrics before I cut into them. Also "old" teaching that it is best to wash to remove excess dyes and realign the threads in the fabric.

Kathleen C said...

I don't wash when i know I'm using the fabrics for a wall quilt. Always wash when I'm making a quilt as a gift because I want to be able to say with assurance that the quilt can be washed and dried. So some of my scraps are prewashed, some not. Now that I'm involved in some swaps and occasionally charity quilts, I feel I should always prewash. I take the fabrics out of the dryer when still a bit damp and put them on a rack or press them right away. Congrats on your Chasing Cottons feature, and thanks.

Loved reading your post about pre-wash or not..... I used to pre-wash but lately I just cut into and sew without washing (unless I have a red or dark blue fabric that just begs to be rinsed) -- I always include a packet of colour catchers with any quilt that I gift to someone and I always give washing instructions on the label of the quilt. I am always amazed that others do not know about colour catchers..... I use them in just about every load of my washing... quilts or not!!

I'm always looking for new opinions and reasons why to wash/not wash fabrics. Thank you.
I work with lots of vintage finds and therefore MUST wash, but for smell and uckiness reasons. (Posted a blog entry about this not too long ago.) For new fabrics, especially chiffons and other delicates, I usually do not wash prior to sewing. My only big exception is for clothing. I ALWAYS wash pre-wash fabric if I'm making clothes with it, for shrinkage issues.

To Wash or not to wash... Great article. For me, I do not wash any new fabric. If it came in a precut, or off of a bolt, I do not wash.

I get a lot of fabric by buying and cutting up old shirts at second hand shops... Those ALWAYS get washed, straight from the bag to the washing machine, the only thing I do is cut off the tags.

I also do not store "used" fabric with "new" fabric. They are in separate bins. I'll intermix within a quilt, but I do not store them together...

Great article!
